To be a successful Hitter you must Think Like A Pitcher
Do you know that over 90% of the time the first pitch you see will be a fastball down the middle of the plate ? Do you also know that 75% of the time most Hitters take the first Pitch ? Some Coaches even Teach to take the first pitch to see what the Pitchers got. The problem with that philosophy is that the first pitch fastball is probably the best pitch your gonna see at that particular time at bat. Why ? Because now your behind in the count. To be a great Hitter you must stay ahead of the count, Pitchers try to get ahead of you with a first pitch strike to put you on the defensive. You must learn to be an offensive Hitter. Be aggressive. If that First Pitch is down the middle of the plate, belt high, attack it. After you take that first pitch strike you will be looking at breaking Pitches ( curves and sliders) and fastballs on the corners of the plate. If you get behind in the count you start guessing at pitches, that's why you see a lot of  Major League players swing at pitches in the dirt . They guessed wrong! Be on the offensive, attack the first pitch fastball, stay ahead of the count to give yourself a better chance of success.

                               Pitch Recognition / Pitchers Tendencies

From the beginning of the game Study the opposing pitcher . His arm movement on fast balls and breaking balls. What pitches does he throw when ahead or behind in the count. When you get up to the plate you will know what to expect. Read the Rotation of the ball. Straight backspin is a fast ball, sideways spin is a curve or slider, slow side spin where you see a small rotating circle is a circle change up. Study the Pitchers Tendencies and learn to read the rotation of the Baseball for greater success at the plate.
I hope this website will give you some fresh insight into the Art of Hitting. Tony Gwynn said the hardest task in all of sports is to hit a round ball with a round bat. The contact area on a Baseball Bat is about 4" long x 1" wide at the Barrel, pretty small area. That's why you must practice constantly to get better, unless your batting 1000 there is always room for improvement.
